"I know there's all this controversy about Winds of Winter and how late it is, but I've always had trouble with deadlines," he said, "and I don't feel happy breaching contracts or missing a deadline or anything like that."
Later on in the conversation, after Martin explained his process ("I hate doing outlines"), he circled back on the topic. He pointed out how his success from the Game of Thrones universe led networks and studios to now buy up the screen rights to all his past works that he may have considered commercial failures back in the day.
"Every time that happens, and I announce it on my website, half the internet goes crazy," Martin said. "'Why the f--- is George R.R. Martin writing this other thing when he should be writing Winds of Winter? What is he doing?' And I want to say, 'I did it in 1993, guys. Come on! It was lying in my drawer, and they wanted it, so I sold it to them!'"
Martin doesn't have kids but likened his works, including Wild Cards and AMC drama Dark Winds, which he executive produces, to children that he loves equally. "Yes, I do love Winds of Winter. I'm still interested in it, I'm still working on it, but honestly, I love these other things, too," he said.
The time between the notes relates the colour to scenes,
A constant vogue of triumphs dislocate man, so it seems,
And space between the focus shape ascend knowledge of love
As song and chance develop time lost social temperance rules above
Then according to the man who showed his outstretched arm to space,
He turned around and pointed revealing all the human race,
I shook my head and smiled a whisper knowing all about the place

What is honor compared to a woman's love? What is duty against the feel of a newborn son in your arms… or the memory of a brother's smile? Wind and words. Wind and words. We are only human, and the gods have fashioned us for love. That is our great glory, and our great tragedy.
George R. R. Martin (A Game of Thrones)
The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect,
So hard to earn, so easily burned
In the fullness of time,
A garden to nurture and protect
It's a measure of a life
The treasure of a life is a measure of love and respect,
The way you live, the gifts that you give
In the fullness of time,
It's the only return that you expect

In this game that we’re playing, we can’t win. Some kinds of failure are better than other kinds, that’s all.

GRRM: I am still working on [the books], and on the TV shows too. We have a lot of stuff going on with HBO, and I have a lot more shows to work on, and books--of course the big one that's late, everybody wants to know about, but it's still late so I don't know how much I can say. I'm still working on it.
Interviewer: But you work? You are working?
GRRM: Yeah. The problem is--well, I don't want to go into this too much--I am working on a lot of things. And it's easier when you're only working on one thing. You can concentrate on it everyday.
Interviewer: But you seem to have been very industrious during your life.
GRRM: Well, compared to some people, yeah. But not compared to others. I did a thing with Stephen King a few years ago--my god, Stephen King, so prolific--he's done like eight novels in the time I've just been working on the last one. He's amazing. And not only does he do a lot, which is itself a marvel, but is good. Everything he does is good. And you can always do a lot if you don't care if it's good or not. And I do care if it's good. It's not easy to make it good, and that's a struggle.
