Neppure io li considero "brutti", e sono d'accordo che la trama sia ridotta proprio all'osso e la durata spesso un pò troppo lunga, ma globalmente i film di Cameron riescono ad essere dei bei film. Sono prodotti in un certo senso artigianali, forse gli ultimi rimasti, molto diversi dai film fatti con lo stampino tipo i film Marvel (ma anche la Pixar non scherza, negli ultimi anni).
Sulla cervelloticità dei film di Nolan non saprei, io non sono particolarmente brillante ma la trama sono sempre riuscito a seguirla senza problemi 
- ok, in Tenet mi sono un pò incartocciato su un dettaglio del finale, ma in generale...

Forse meglio cerebrali, secondo me hanno dentro tanti elementi cervellotici, ma io sono sicuramente meno brillante di te in quegli ambiti perché non arrivo neanche a non capirli, non mi prendono proprio.

Premessa doverosa: non ho visto il primo film, ma ne conosco la trama. Detto questo, il sequel mi è sembrato un enorme e costosissimo giocattolo privo di sostanza e con dialoghi persino più banali di molti recenti film del MCU. Sapevo dei significati panteistici e new age già presenti nella prima opera, ma è tutto davvero banale e prevedibile. Non concordo neanche con @Jacaerys Velaryon sul fatto che sia un film "strano" perché a metà tra sequel e reboot o che sia tecnicamente accurato. Si tratta banalmente di un sequel che per motivi monetari cinematografici ricalca in gran parte le dinamiche del primo film, e in pratica si scrive da solo. L'aspetto tecnico è poderoso, ma allo stesso tempo finto e per tutte le tre ore non sono riuscito ad immergermi davvero in quello che vedevo, cosa che un film di questo tipo dovrebbe fare. Dal mio punto di vista di boomer nell'animo, un film tecnicamente ben fatto è uno qualunque della trilogia di LOTR, dove il digitale è al servizio dell'opera e non fa a pugni con tutto il resto. Ma persino SW Episodio III che pure trabocca di digitale in ogni inquadratura mi è risultato molto più immersivo e coinvolgente, per non parlare di un film molto più vecchio come Terminator 2 (di Cameron!) dove la tecnologia non era ancora diventata così capillare da rubare la scena a tutto il resto. Forse sono io che prendo il film nel modo sbagliato, ma è francamente difficile affermare che il film abbia una profondità anche solo a livello di dialoghi, personaggi e trama che sono alcune delle ossature principali di una pellicola.
Discorso Kiri
il mistero chiaramente consiste nell'identità del padre e nel fatto che la figlia di Grace abbia capacità fuori dal comune. Durante il suo collegamento con l'Albero degli Antenati vede lo spirito della madre che sembra sapere qualcosa, ma deve trattarsi di un'informazione talmente sconvolgente da non dirla alla figlia. Spero vivamente che non si vada verso metafore cristologiche perché quelle possono andar bene per i film di Snyder e non per questi.
In definitiva, il film si merita un 5 bello pieno.
Dal punto di vista tecnico la mia critica è che, come diceva il Lord in un precedente commento, il 3D non sempre era perfetto, a volte "sfarfallava", ma a parte questo il film mi sembra formalmente ineccepibile. Sulla banalità sostanziale della storia si sono scritti fiumi di parole già dal 2009, per cui è inutile ripetersi.
Personalmente andrò a vedere altri sequel, ma più per disincantata curiosità che per reale passione.

a mio avviso è stata concepita da Eywa in persona attraverso il corpo di Grace, per cui sarà a tutti gli effetti il Cristo Na'vi (o, se si vuole giocare con ASOIAF, è la Bran Stark di Pandora, in comunanza con la mente collettiva del pianeta).
Aggiungo che
sono curioso di sapere dove Cameron vuole andare a parare con Quaritch: si intravede un possibile arco di redenzione, ma a che scopo? Sarà un alleato contro un nemico più grande?

L'unico modo in cui uno come Quaritch possa redimersi è se si sacrificasse per il figlio, a cui ha dimostrato in fondo di tenere, se questo dovesse essere minacciato o manipolato dai suoi superiori dell'esercito o del governo terrestre. Ricordo male o nel prossimo capitolo dovrebbero esserci sequenze ambientate sulla Terra?
Comunque col senno di poi mi rendo conto di non essermi goduto pienamente il film avendolo visto in un cinema con schermo piccolo, poltrone scomode e riscaldamento troppo alto. Probabilmente in queste condizioni avrei mal giudicato anche Dune, anche se l'importanza dell'aspetto visivo è l'unica cosa che i film hanno in comune.
Devo essere l'unico a cui é piaciuto 
Sia chiaro: tutte le pecche che mi potevo immaginare basandomi sul primo erano lá in bella vista. Ma ci ho visto anche dell'altro, e questo non me lo aspettavo. Sono rimasto sorpreso, per dire. E per rimanere ancora sorpreso, sono disposto ad andare a vedere i prossimi.
É una esplorazione, piú che una storia: magari non trovi quello che cerchi e quello che trovi é un pó meh, ma é comunque una scoperta, qualcosa che hai visto solo perché ti sei immerso nell'aventura, meraviglia piú che saggezza o conoscenza. Non dissimile dalle esperienze che Cameron fa quando si immerge nella fossa delle Marianne: non é un biologo marino quindi capirá poco, la sua é una esperienza forse superficiale, ma ricca di meraviglia 
Poi, chiaramente, banalitá e luoghi comuni si sapeva che c'erano e ci sono.
A quanto pare Avatar è la rappresentazione di James Cameron del tema dei quattro elementi: Terra per il primo film, Acqua per il secondo, Fuoco per il terzo... e vedremo finalmente anche il lato oscuro di Pandora.

Ci saranno le montagne galleggianti... si sono già viste da qualche parte. Anche se sinceramente il primo film parrebbe riferirsi tanto anche all'aria con tutta quella parte sullo "pterodattilo".

Film incredibile, emozionante, che si staglia un chilometro più in alto dell'orrore a base di fumettacci e supereroi propinatoci negli ultimi dieci anni.
Leggo poi di paragoni tra Cameron e Lucas ... Cioè non scherziamo, Lucas non sa nemmeno tenere dritta la telecamera, Cameron (che non amo particolarmente) è probabilmente il regista della sua generazione più dotato tecnicamente.
