(First, sincere apologies for the delay. I was joking about taking my time, but unfortunately it took longer to write than I expected and then I had re-write it due to a crash. It was way too late for that, so it had to wait for the morning.)

Ser Arys Oakheart is wandering through the shadow city of Sunspear at least two weeks after the Areo chapter because a fortnight past a merchant was murdered simply because he was from King's Landing.

He's going incognito, in Dornish robes and with a hood up, but he has his sword with him. It's evening, and cold. He thinks about how the Oakhearts were always staunch foes of the Dornishmen. There were tapestries at Old Oak: Lord Edgerran the Open-handed, the heads of a hundred Dornishmen piled at his feet; the Three Leaves in the Prince's Pass stabbed by spears as Alester blew his warhorn with his dying breath; Ser Olyvar the Green Oak in his white cloak dying beside the Young Dragon.

The shadow city is basically the city around the castle of Sunspear. It's so hot during the day, the streets are mostly deserted, but as evening falls they come alive. Things were pretty bad when the news of the Red Viper's death arrived but they grew a little quieter when Doran put the Sand Snakes in tower cells.

Beneath the second of the Winding Walls, a pillow girl calls down to him wearing only jewels and oil. He thinks of Baelor the Blessed, who fasted to the point of fainting to tame his lusts, and he wonders if he has to do the same.

He hears finger drums beating the quick rhythm of a spear dance. Dornishmen eat grilled snake meat with sauces that can bring tears to the eyes. Arys has heard that the best sauces are made with a drop of venom, as well as mustard seeds and dragon peppers. Myrcella loves the spicy food, as well as a new game that's become popular in Dorne called _cyvasse_ which arrived at the Planky Town on a ship from Volantis. She's getting along very well with Prince Trystane.

Arys thinks back to his first private meeting with Doran -- it seems to have happened only earlier in the day. Doran feels there's danger to Myrcella, but Arys says that no one would hurt a little girl. Doran reminds him that Elia had a little girl who was a princess as well. He says most of the smallfolk are calling for war, and half the lords agree with them.

Doran reveals that he wants to send Myrcella and Arys to the Water Gardens. His ancestor Prince Maron raised the Gardens as a gift to his Targaryen bride. There are lots of children there, both of high and gentle birth. There's a catch, though: Doran doesn't want Arys to tell anyone about the move. For safety, he says, and Arys accepts it.

Then he comes back to the present and finds the place he's seeking. He enters but no one is there. He calls for his lady . . . and she slips out from behind the door. She's wearing a snake bracelet thing and nothing else. Steamy sex follows. After all's said and done, he's got some torn clothing and some fresh bleeding scratches down his back. He feels very badly, very guilty about his shame and his failure to hold to his vows. He insists on leaving and she wonders if he's going to another woman. She offers to fight her for him, bare-breasted, knife to knife. Unless it's a Sand Snake, of course, because they can share then -- she loves her cousins.

She teases him about Myrcella, wondering if he loves his other princess more and offers to play the innocent. He thinks that she can't help herself -- in the Reach they say that Dornishmen are hot tempered and the women are wild and wanton because their peppers and spices heat the blood.

He does tell her that he's leaving for the Water Gardens in four days. Interesting detail here: Arys has not had a woman in ten years or more, since he donned the white cloak. (Wonder who his predecessor was, and what happened to him?)

Arianne says the Bastard of Godsgrace deflowered her when they were both 14. Doran learned about it but did nothing, which he's very good at doing. He calls it _thinking_, she says. Then he insists on leaving, and on ending the relationship, but she doesn't want him to go. She wonders if he thinks he's the only KG to love a woman.

He thinks about that. Boros Blount visited the Street of Silks often. Preston Greenfield visited a certain draper's house whenever the draper was away. Ser Terrence Toyne was found sleeping with a king's mistress. He swore it was for love, but it cost him his life and hers, and brought the fall of his House and the death of "the noblest knight who ever lived", Prince Aemon the Dragonknight.

She asks about Lucamore the Lusty, who had 3 wives and an obscene number of kids. There's a funny song about him, but he responds that it's not funny. When Ser Lucamore Strong's lies were discovered, he was castrated by his Sworn Brothers and Jaehaerys I sent him to the Wall. She asks then about the Dragonknight, who took his queen to bed and had a child with her. But Arys says he doesn't believe that -- that was a tale put about by his brother when he wanted to put aside his son Daeron in favor of his bastard. He wasn't called Unworthy without cause. (Hah!)

She talks of Prince Lewyn. He agrees he was a great knight. Then she drops the bomb: he had a paramour. Toyne's treason and Lucamore's deceits can be found in the White Book, but nothing is said of Lewyn having a paramour. She's still alive, according to Arianne.

Then she swoops in on how Myrcella is braver, smarter, more confident, and more courteous than Tommen. He sort of admits that she isn't wrong.

Viserys I intended his daughter Rhaenyra to rule after him! But the Lord Commander, Ser Criston Cole, Criston the Kingmaker, thought otherwise. He convinced Prince Aegon to seize the throne as the king lay dying. Why isn't clear, Arys thinks: maybe ambition, maybe because he was nobly defending ancient Andal custom, or maybe he was getting revenge on the princess who some whispered had been his lover before he took the white and who had spurned him. He paid for his treason, anyhow.

Arianne argues about why Doran wants to send Myrcella away -- not to protect her from assassins, but from those who would put a crown on her head. She says that it'll be a prison, Areo Hotah will see to it. Arys is uneasy about Hotah, who keeps his great axe beside him even when he sleeps. She wants him to support Myrcella for queen, and says she'd not see Tommen harmed.

She says Myrcella would let him marry her, maybe even keep his white cloak too. He continues resisting, and she starts to tremble. It's not right for him to make her beg, she says, but he's refusing her when she's in desperate need of a knight to keep her safe. He's slow -- he says her father's guards would protect her, but _they're_ the ones she's afraid of. She thinks she'll be dragged off like the Sand Snakes, whom neither of them have been able to see since they were put in their tower.

He says they were dangerous, but she notes the youngest two are all of 8 and 6. She does say that Tyene and she are of an age, and have no secrets, so she thinks her father might send her into a cell after them for knowing of the plotting.

She says that Doran has always been unhappy that she was born a daughter. He tries to say that Doran left her to rule in Sunspear when he went to the Water Gardens, but she says that Oberyn and the bureaucrats ran everything. Apparently Doran had been retired there for a long time -- she says that Oberyn went to the Gardens twice a fortnight, but she was summoned twice a year.

And now she says that he may get what he wants, because of her brother Quentyn. He was fostered by Lord Anders Yronwood, and took knighthood from him rather than from the Red Viper. Arys says he was told that Quentyn was in the Boneway with Yronwood's host, but she says that her father is hiding the truth that Quentyn is in the Free Cities hiring sellswords.

There's a bit about the dragon biting its tail of the Tolands, which represents time as a circular thing. Maybe the Dance of the Dragons is to be repeated, with Anders as the Kingmaker reborn whispering to Quentyn that men should not kneel to women, especially not a willful one like Arianne.

And Arys buckles.

Arys swears he'll support Myrcella's claim, because she's older and better suited. Then he asks what Arianne will have of him, and she says she wants all and forever, but first ... Myrcella.

The end. Cool stuff. She's completely wrapped Arys around her little finger. He had no chance. My summary doesn't do justice to just how absolutely besotted and under her thumb Arys is. I like him, a lot, but he is pretty weak willed (oh, yeah, I forgot -- he was still ashamed about beating Sansa, and when Tyrion picked him to accompany Myrcella he lit a candle to the Warrior in thanks as it meant escaping Joff.)

Il riassunto del capitolo di Arys Oakheart ai tempi del mega prologo di AffC, prima di The Arms of Kraken insomma.

Scusate, ma cos'è??? 

Martin aveva programmato di iniziare AFfC con un lungo prologo, composto da 7 capitoli da differenti pdv, ambientati a Dorne (3 capitoli, pdv: Areo Hotah, Arys Oakheart, Arianne Martell) e nelle Isole di Ferro (i 4 capitoli che poi ha inserito in AotK, dai pdv di Aeron, Asha, Victarion, e di nuovo Aeron). Ognuno dei 7 avrebbe dovuto avere un titoletto, che indicava il dv senza farne il nome - per esempio, Il Capitano della Guardia o La figlia della Piovra.

"The Soiled Knight" avrebbe dovuto essere il secondo dei capitoli dorniani in questo mega-prologo. In questa veste, Martin l'ha inviato in omaggio ai membri di un forum americano (ezboard, il forum dela BWB) che ogni anno gli fanno un regalo di Natale. Quacuno di loro ne ha fatto i riassunto riportato qui.

Ora, dopo l'ultima riforma, i capitoli del'ex-prologo dovrebbero essere sparsi all'interno del libro. Mi pare che l'idea che gira è che vadano a costituire due specie di pdv, ossia due serie di capitoli comparabili come dimensioni a quelle dei pdv, con ambientazione simile, ma narrati da pdv diversi. Ma non si sa nulla di proprio preciso, credo

Ser Arys Oakheart sta vagando nella città delle ombre, Lancia del Sole, circa due settimane dopo il capitolo su Areo, come si deduce dal fatto che riporti l’assassinio di un mercante di Approdo del Re avvenuto appena quindici giorni prima.

Si aggira in incognito, vestito in abiti Dorniani con il cappuccio sollevato, armato della sua spada. E’ sera, e fa freddo. Pensa a come gli Oakhearts siano sempre stati nemici giurati dei Dorniani. C’era un arazzo a Vecchie Quercie: Lord Edgerran Mano Aperta, alla testa di un centinaio di guerrieri Dorniani morti ammassati ai suoi piedi; le Tre Foglie del Passo del Principe infilzate dalle lance mentre Alester suona il suo corno da guerra con il suo ultimo respiro; Ser Olyvar la Quercia Verde nella sua veste bianca morente alle spalle del Giovane Drago.

La cittdelle ombre è fondamentalmente costituita dalla città cresciuta intorno al castello di Lancia del Sole. E’ incredibilmente caldo durante il giorno, le strade sono perlopiù deserte, ma appena scende la notte divengono vive. La situazione stava volgendo al peggio dopo le notizie sulla morte della Vipera Rossa ma migliorarono leggermente una volta che Doran Martell ebbe chiuso le Serpi delle Sabbie nelle celle delle torri.

Al di sotto del secondo Muro Serpeggiante (qui traduco liberamente, non so cosa utilizzerà Altieri, le parole esatte sono Winding Walls), una prostituta lo chiama vestita soltanto di gioielli ed olio. Ser Arys Pensa a Baelor il Benedetto, che arrivò a digiunare al punto di svenire pur di assopire il proprio desiderio, e pensa se anche lui non debba fare la stessa cosa.

Ascolta il ritmo di una danza delle lance suonata da una tamburo. I Dorniani mangiano carne di serpente grigliata condita con salse talmente piccanti da far lacrimare gli occhi. Arys ha sentito dire che nelle salse migliori viene aggiunto anche un pizzico di veleno, così come semi di mostarda e peperoncini drago. Myrcella ama i cibi speziati, così come un nuovo gioco, divenuto popolare a Dorne, chiamato cyvasse, arrivato direttamente da Volantis con una nave. Il rapporto con il Principe Trystane migliora di giorno in giorno.

Arys ritorna con la mente al suo primo incontro privato con Doran – sembra che sia avvenuto solamente quel mattino. Doran pensa che Myrcella sia in pericolo, ma Arys controbatte dicendo che nessuno farebbe del male ad una bambina. Doran gli ricorda che Elia aveva una figlia, anch’essa bambina e principessa. Aggiunge come gran parte del popolino stia inneggiando alla Guerra e come metà dei lord alfieri di Lancia del Sole sia d’accordo con loro.

Doran rivela che vorrebbe mandare Myrcella e Arys a Giardini Acquatici (anche qui la traduzione è libera. Il nome originale è Water Gardens). Il suo antenato, il Principe Maron costruì Giardini Acquatici come un regalo per la sua sposa Targaryen. Ci sono molti bambini lì, di alto e nobile lignaggio. C’è un nodo però: Doran pretende che Arys non dica a nessuno di questo spostamento. Per sicurezza, dice, e Arys accetta.

Il cavaliere ritorna al presente e trova il posto che stava cercando. Entra ma lo trova deserto. Chiama la sua signora… e lei esce da dietro la porta. Veste di un braccialetto a forma di serpente e null’altro. Segue una scena di sesso appassionato. Al termine di tutto si ritrova con parte dei vestiti strappati e delle ferite sanguinanti sulla schienza. Si sente scorretto, colpevole e si vergogna del suo fallimento nel mantenere I suoi giuramenti. Insiste nell’andarsene e lei chiede se non si stia dirigendo verso un’altra donna. Lei si offre di lottare con lei per lui, nude, coltello contro coltello. A meno che non sia una Serpe delle Sabbie, ovviamente, perché con loro potrebbe dividerlo.

Si fa beffe di lui a causa di Myrcella, chiedendogli se lui non ami l’altra principessa più di lei e si offre di fingersi innocente. Lui pensa che lei non sia in grado di aiutare se stessa – nell’altopiano si dice che i Dorniani siano irritabili e che le donne siano selvagge a causa dei peperoncini e delle spezie, che scaldano il loro sangue.

Le dice che se ne andrà a Giardini Acquatici quattro giorni più tardi. Dettagli interessanti: Arys non ha avuto una donna da più di dieci anni, sin da quando venne investito come cavaliere della Guardia Reale.

Arianne dice che il Bastardo di Grazia degli Dei la deflorò quando avevano entrambi quattordici anni. Doran lo seppe ma non fece nulla, non è bravo nel fare. Lui lo chiama “pensare”, lei dice. Poi lui insiste nell’andarsene, fino alla fine della discussione, lei non vuole che lui vada. Lei chiede se lui creda di essere l’unico della Guardia Reale ad amare una donna.

Lui ci pensa. Boros Blount visitava spesso la Strada della Seta. Preston Greenfield andava nella casa di un mercante di tessuti mentre il proprietario no c’era. Ser Terrene Toyne fu scoperto a dormire con una delle concubine del re. Spergiurò che fu per amore ma questo gli costò la vita sua e quella di lei, provocò la caduta della sua nobile Casa e la morte del “più nobile dei cavalieri che abbia mai vissuto”, il Principe Aemon “Cavaliere del Drago”.

Lei gli chiede di Lucamore il Lascivo, che ebbe tre mogli ed un osceno numero di bambini. C’è una canzone divertente su di lui, ma Arys risponde che non è divertente. Quando le bugie di Ser Lucamore furono scoperte fu castrato dai suoi Confratelli Giurati e Jaehaerys I lo mandò sulla Barriera. Lei chiede quindi del Cavaliere del Drago, che portò a letto la sua regine ed ebbe con lei un figlio. Arys risponde dicendo di non credere a questa storia – che è semplicemente una voce messa in giro dal fratello Aegon il Mediocre per poter mettere da parte il proprio figlio Daeron in favore di uno dei suoi figli bastardi. Non è chiamato il Mediocre per caso.

Lei parla del Principe Lewyn. Lui concorda sul fatto che fosse un grande cavaliere. Così lei colpisce nel segno: aveva una concubina. Il tradimento di Toyne e le bugie di Lucamore possono essere trovate nel Libro Bianco ma niente viene detto di Lewyn, che aveva una concubina. Lei è ancora viva a quanto dice Arianne.

Poi lei comincia a elogiare Myrcella per quanto è coraggiosa, brillante, sicura di sé e cortese di Tommen. Lui è costretto ad ammettere che Arianne non sta sbagliando.

Viserys I aveva destinato sua figlia Rhaenyra al trono, per la sua successione. Ma il Lord Comandante, Ser Criston Cole, Criston il Creatore di Re, la pensava diversamente. Convinse il Principe Aegon ad impadronirsi del trono mentre il re era ancora morente. Non è chiaro il perché ma Arys pensa: forse per ambizione, forse perché stava nobilmente difendendo un antico costume andalo o forse perché perché voleva prendere la sua vendetta sulla principessa, di cui si diceva fosse stato l’amante prima che prendesse il bianco e lei lo rifiutasse. Pagò per il suo tradimento, in ogni caso.

Arianne capisce perché Doran voglia mandare via Myrcella – non per proteggerla dagli assassini, ma per chi vorrebbe metterle una corona sulla testa. Lei dice che sarebbe una prigione, Areo Hotah l’avrebbe predisposta (è l’unico significato che sono riuscito a dare alla frase che in origine è… She says that it'll be a prison, Areo Hotah will see to it. Vedete voi, un aiuto è gradito!). Arys turbato da Hotah, che tiene la sua grande ascia con se anche quando dorme. Lei dice che vorrebbe lui supportasse la causa di Myrcella come regina e che non vuole che a Tommen venga fatto del male.

Lei dice che Myrcella potrebbe lasciare che lui la sposi, anche mantenendo la sua Cappa Bianca. Lui continua a resistere e lei inizia a fremere. Lei dice che non è giusto che lui le faccia le elemosina ma lui la sta rifiutando proprio quando lei ha disperatamente bisogno di un cavaliere che la tenga al sicuro. Lui è un po’ lento – dice che le guardie di suo padre l’avrebbero protetta. Ma loro sono proprio coloro che lei teme. Lei pensa che potrebbero trascinarla via come le Serpi delle Sabbie, che nessuno ha più visto dopo che vennero rinchiuse nelle torri.

Lui dice che sono pericolose ma lei gli fa notare che le più giovani hanno soltanto otto e sei anni. Lei aggiunge anche che Tyene è una sua coetanea, sua amica, e non ha segreti per lei. Per questo Arianne pensa che suo padre potrebbe mandarla nelle celle con loro per conoscere i loro piani.

Lei precisa che suo padre fu estremamente deluso dal fatto che lei fosse nata femmina. Arys cerca di dire che Doran lascerà che lei guidi Lancia del Sole quando andrà a Giardini Acquatici, ma lei controbatte dicendo che Oberyn e i burocrati avevano previsto tutto. Apparentemente Doran si ritirò a Giardini Acquatici per un lungo periodo – lei dice che Oberyn si recava ai Giardini due volte ogni quindici giorni, ma lei veniva convocata due volte l’anno.

E ora lei aggiunge che lui potrebbe avere quello che vuole, grazie a suo fratello Quentyn. Cresciuto e investito cavaliere da Lord anders Yronwood, invece che dalla Vipera Rossa. Arys interviene dicendo che lui sapeva della presenza di Quentyn sulla Strada delle Ossa con gli Yronwood, lei controbatte aggiungendo che Doran sta nascondendo la verità, ovvero che Quentyn è nelle Città Libere ad ingaggiare mercenari.

C’è un piccolo discorso a poroposito del drago che si morde la coda dei Tolands, che rappresenta il tempo come un essenza circolare. Forse la Danza dei Draghi si ripeterà con Anders come il Creatore di Re rinato che convince Quentyn del fatto che gli uomini non dovrebbero inginocchiarsi alle donne, soprattutto ad una testarda come Arianne.

E Arys si convince.

Arys giura di supportare la causa di Myrcella, a causa della sua età e della sua migliore predisposizione. Poi lui chiede cosa Arianne vuole da lui e lei risponde di volere tutto e per sempre, ma prima… Myrcella.

La fine. Lei ha completamente intrappolato Arys. Lui non ha scampo.

Ho cercato di rendere tutto il meglio possibile, non è stato facile. E’ un modo di scrivere piuttosto strano quello con cui l’autore riassume il racconto dello Zio e ho trovato diverse difficoltà. Ho lasciato perdere due parti, all’inizio e alla fine, in cui parla del ritardo per la pubblicazione, dell’imprecisione eccetera.

Nella conclusione dice una cosa interessante riguardo Arys. Il cavaliere era impressionato dalla bellezza di Sansa, e quando Tyrion decide di mandarlo con Myrcella a Dorne egli accende una candela per il Guerriero ringraziandolo di averlo portato lontano da Joffrey.
