Nuovo riassunto del capitolo, un po' più particolareggiato:
The chapter opens with a conversation between Arya and the Kindly Old Man.
Kindly Old Man "Who are you?"
Arya "I am no one"
Kindly Old Man"You lie"
They discuss her prayers and why she prays the names she does. He asks about the names and she says they are people that she hates. He asks Arya if she has come to them so she can learn to kill these people. If so, he tells her, then she has come to the wrong place. He tells her that it is not her decision as to who lives and dies but that of the Many Faced God.
They pray everyday before breakfast in Bravossi language. Arya cannot speak it, so she silently prays her death list. She thinks of those that are in the temple with her. The Kindly old Man is the only one who speaks the common tongue. There is another young girl who Arya refers to as Waif. There is also the cooks and acoloytes who live below the temple. All pray and there are many other gods such as the Stranger, the Weeping Woman, and the Many Faced God. Arya believes there are 30 different Gods that are prayed to.
The House of Black and White has 3 levels. She is not allowed to go into the lowest level and she is caught trying to do so and caught lying about it. She thinks there must be trasures down there.
Everyday Arya has to work. She often works in the kitchen with a woman named Uma. She is struck with a spoon once, but generally likes Uma. Neither can understand the other but work out a way of communication. Arya's favorite time of the day is supper. She is allowed to ask questions during dinner. one time she asks why people are so peaceful when they come to the temple to die. The Kindly Old Man tells her that it is because death is not the worst thing. All conversations with Kindly Old Man asks her name and she says she is no one. He always says "You lie". He tells her Valar Dohaeris...."All men must serve". And he calls her Arya Stark of Winterfell. If she wants to stay, she must serve.
People come to the temple to die. The bodies are stripped and taken to the lower vaults after they die. One time Arya is suspicous of white meat during dinner. the Kindly Old Man sees her horror and tells her " Pork, child."
She is told that she must strip herself of her pride because she still acts as the Lord's daughter. She must do so or leave. The cost of staying is to give all of herself. The Kindly Old Man can almost read her thoughts as he speaks to her. He tells her that very few women have ever served the Many Faced God. To serve the Many Faced God takes all.
She decides to leave and takes all of her belongings. She thinks of her wolf pack and her father words, "the lone wolf dies but the pack survives". She arrives at the docks but then stops herself. She begins to dump all of her belongings into the canal. She strips naked and dumps her clothes, too. The last item she holds is Needle. She looks at it, seeing Mikken's mark on the blade. She realizes Needle represents her whole life, all of her family and the North. She thinks of Jon Snow's smile. She finds a place to hide Needle in the steps of the Temple. She buries it there and returns to the temple. The Kindly old Man knows about Needle.
He tells her of the beginning of the Faceless Men. There were 14 Flames that lit Valyria. They are described like volcanos and were the mines of Valyria. Slaves worked the mines and suffered greatly. There were fire worms in the mines that were akin to dragons. They had no wings but they breathed fire. the first Faceless Man came from the mines. There were people from a hundred different nations imprisoned in the mines. The slaves cried cried out for release. The first Faceless gave release to the weakest of them. Arya was appalled that he hadn't killed the masters. The Kindly Old Man said that the masters were dealt with later.
Arya is told how to know when people lie, that there are many different ways to know. Arya becomes a novice and is paired with the Waif. They teach each other each other's language. Arya is frustared in learning and teaching. They also play a lying game.
Waif "Who are you?"
Arya "No one"
"Waif "You lie. Lie gooder"
Arya "Better, stupid!"
Arya is told by the Kindly old Man that the Waif is actually 36 years old.The Waif's past dealt with poisons. Arya asks to learn how to change her face. She asks if he knows Jaquen H'Gar. He says he does not know that name. He tells her it takes years of study and prayer to change ones face. He tels her to stick out her tongue and puff out her cheeks. She must train to control her face. She begins to practice everyday in front of a Myrish mirror. She is told that if she can learn to control her face, she can lie.
She is sent to a Bravossi Fishmonger who has a bad back. She is sent there to play a role. The Kindly old Man tells her to pick a new name and she picks "Cat". She walks to the docks and gets lost, but along the way she begins to chant.

1) I wonder if this line of questioning might be inspired in any way by certain religions? Like Zen Buddhism, with its koans and its efforts to trascend the ego... Does anyone more of an expert than I associate those questions with anything of that sort? Because we might get a better idea of what the Faceless Men are about if we could identify some sort of source religion(s)... Like that brilliant bit where someone noticed Melisandre's slogan in the Jon chapter matched one of those Nazi bits of propaganda.*
2) Any wagers that Arya may end up sneaking into the lowest level of the temple? I'll bet that's where they do whatever magic mojo they do to allow their Faceless Men to take on the faces of others -- they must "harvest" them from those who die on the premises. Not quite the same as my notion that the Faceless Men were able to turn into the people they killed directly, but close enough for some Perceptive Points.

Il capitolo si apre con un dialogo tra Arya e il Vecchio Gentile.
Vecchio: "Chi sei?"
Arya: "Nessuno"
Vecchio: "Stai mentendo"
Fanno una discussione sulle preghiere di Arya, sul perchè preghi quei nomi. Il vecchio le chiede chi sono e lei dice che sono le persone che odia. Lui le chiede se è venuta in quel luogo per imparare come uccidere quelle persone. Se è così, le dice, allora è venuta nel posto sbagliato. Le dice che non spetta a lei decidere chi vive e chi muore, ma al dio dalle molte facce.
Ogni giorno prima di colazione pregano in lingua braavosiana. Arya non la conosce, così silenziosamente ripete la sua lista di morte. Pensa a coloro che sono nel tempio con lei. Il Vecchio è l'unico che conosce la lingua comune. C'è un'altra giovane ragazza che Arya chiama "Sperduta". Ci sono poi i cuoichi e gli accoliti che vivono sotto il tempio. Tutti pregano, e ci sono molti altri dei come Lo Sconosciuto, La Donna piangente, e il Dio dalle molte facce. Secondo Arya vengono adorati almeno 30 dei.
La Casa del Bianco e del Nero ha 3 livelli. Arya non ha il permesso di recarsi nel livello più basso, e quando la sorprendono a tentare di andarvi è costretta a mentire. Lei pensa che vi vengano custoditi dei tesori.
Ogni giorno Arya deve lavorare. Spesso lavora in cucina con una donna di nome Uma. Una volta Uma la picchia col cucchiaio, ma solitamente ad Arya la donna è simpatica. Non si capiscono tra loro, ma trovano un modo di comunicare. Il momento preferito della giornata di Arya è la cena. Una volta chiede perchè le persone che vanno al tempio a morire sono così pacifiche. Il Vecchio le dice che è perchè la morte non è la sorte peggiore. In tutte le loro conversazioni il Vecchio le chiede il suo nome. Lei risponde sempre "nessuno" e lui "Stai mentendo". Le dice anche Valar Dohaeris...."Tutti gli uomini devono servire". E la chiama Arya Stark di Grande Inverno. Se vuole rimanere, deve servire.
Le persone vengono al tempio per morire. I corpi vengono poi spogliati e portati nei piani inferiori. Una volta, Arya guarda con sospetto la carne bianca servita per cena. Il Vecchio vede il suo orrore e le dice che è maiale.
Le viene detto che deve abbandonare il suo orgoglio, che si comporta ancora come la figlia di un Lord. Deve fare questo o andarsene. Il prezzo per rimanere è dare tutta se stessa. Il Vecchio riesce quasi a leggere i suoi pensieri mentre è con lei. Le dice che pochissime donne hanno mai servito il Dio dalle molte facce, e che servirlo implica dare tutto.
Arya decide di andarsene e raccoglie le sue cose. Pensa al suo branco e alle parole di suo padre, "il lupo solitario perisce, mentre il branco sopravvive". Quando arriva al porto si ferma, poi comincia a gettare tutte le sue cose nel canale. Si spoglia e vi getta anche i vestiti. L'unica cosa che tiene è Ago. La guarda, vedendo il marchio di Mikken sulla lama. Ago rappresenta la sua intera vita, la sua famiglia e il Nord. Pensa al sorriso di Jon Snow. Trova un posto dove nascondere Ago sotto gli scalini del tempio. La seppellisce e ritorna al tempio. Il vecchio sa che l'ha tenuta.
Le racconta come sono nati gli Uomini senza volto. C'erano 14 fuochi che illuminavano Valyria. Vengono descritti come vulcani, ed erano le miniere di Valyria. In queste miniere lavoravano degli schiavi che soffrivano moltissimo. Nelle miniere c'erano vermi di fuoco che che erano simili a draghi. Non avevano ali ma sputavano fuoco. Quando i primi Uomini senza volto giunsero alle miniere trovarono che vi erano imprigionate persone da più di cento nazioni. Gli schiavi supplicavano di essere liberati. I primi Uomini senza volto uccisero il più debole di loro, liberandolo. Arya è sconvolta nel sapere che non uccisero i padroni. Il Vecchio spiega che dei padroni si occuparono dopo.
Ad Arya viene spiegato che ci sono molti modi di capire quando le persone mentono. Arya diventa una novizia e viene messa in coppia con Sperduta. Si insegnano l'una la lingua dell'altra, e per Arya è molto frustrante. Fanno anche un gioco di bugie.
Sperduta: "Chi sei?"
Arya"Nessuno"
Sperduta: "Menti. Devi mentire più meglio"
Arya "Meglio, stupida!"
Il vecchio dice ad Arya che Sperduta ha in realtà 36 anni, e in passato si occupava di veleni. Arya chiede di imparare a cambiare il suo viso. Chiede al vecchio se conosce Jaquen H'Gar. Lui dice che non conosce quel nome. Le dice che ci vogliono anni di studio e preghiera per imparare a cambiare faccia. Le dice di mettere fuori la lingua e gonfiare le guance. Deve imparare a controllare il suo viso. Comincia a fare pratica ogni giorno davanti a uno specchio di Myr. Le dicono che se impara a controllare il suo viso saprà anche mentire.
Viene mandata da un pescivendolo braavosiano che ha mal di schiena, perchè reciti un ruolo. Il vecchio le dice di scegliersi un nuovo nome, e lei sceglie "Cat". Si reca ai porti e si perde, ma lungo la strada comincia a cantilenare.

Meno male che Arya ha tenuto Ago!
Dal momento che non l'ha gettata la sua metamorfosi non può dirsi completa, e non so quanto questo sia un male. E' importante che Arya mantenga una sua identità, anche e soprattutto quando entrerà nella nuova realtà di Braavos.
Forse Ago sarà causa di problemi per lei, ma sono sicura che in futuro le tornerà utile.
Cmq, Arya è una grande! Mostra una forza e una determinazione che pochi nel libro dimostrano ( soprattuto contando che è ancora una bambina) !
