Ovviamente non lo diranno mai nelle storiografie ufficiali, per non "sporcare" l'immagine del Vecchio Re, ma...

Io sono per l'opzione "complottista": nelle opere di Martin si fa spesso cenno al fatto che il Trono di Spade sembri rifiutare e danneggiare fisicamente i regnanti che per un motivo o l'altro si dimostrino inadatti al ruolo, come dimostrano i casi di Rhaenyra e Joffrey. Non saprei dire quale tipo di magia lo animi, ma considerando che il trono è composto dalle spade di tutti i regnanti e lord sconfitti da Aegon il Conquistatore ipotizzo che si tratti di una forma di "vendetta" di questi ultimi verso re e regine che finiscono per danneggiare i Sette Regni attraverso caos e guerre.
È anche ragionevole ipotizzare che la leggenda del trono assassino sia stata diffusa ad arte per mascherare dinamiche di potere molto più concrete, e del resto la narrazione ufficiale (e imperfetta per forza di cose) dei vari maestri di TWOIAF e F&B non porta a complete certezze. Tuttavia mi sento istintivamente per la prima ipotesi.

Più che Jaehaerys, che era piuttosto giovane, presumo che la responsabilità dell'assassinio possa essere di Rogar Baratheon. In alternativa, potrebbe essere stato un suicidio alla maniera di Nerone, il quale è una palese fonte di ispirazione di Maegor.

A mio parere la maledizione del trono è più che altro una cosa simbolica: un sovrano inadatto presta meno cautela nel sedersi sul seggio e si ferisce con maggior probabilità. Nel caso di Rhaenyra, poi, sospetto che ci sia stata anche un po' di propaganda negativa.

Tralasciando subito la maledizione del trono, troppo poco realistica per i gusti di GRRM, si possono escludere Elinor e le Guardie Reali superstiti, la prima perché non sufficientemente forte e le seconde perché non ci sono segni di colluttazione né indizi che si siano messe d'accordo per tradire il re (il regicidio da parte di una Guardia Reale è un atto talmente grave che ha più senso sia qualcosa di unico, attribuibile solo a Jaime Lannister).
Restano come opzioni il suicidio o l'assassino segreto. Il suicidio sarebbe coerente con l'idea che Maegor sia ispirato a Nerone, ma non risulta che il Crudele fosse così disperato e le ferite mi sembrano compatibili con un suicidio solo fino a un certo punto (come avrebbe fatto a sfregiarsi le braccia e il collo così violentemente, e perché non avrebbe usato una spada?) Propendo per l'intervento di un assassino giunto dai passaggi segreti, per la precisione un Senza Volto assoldato dai sostenitori di Jaehaerys, i Senza Volto sono famosi per uccidere senza lasciare tracce evidenti del loro lavoro. L'ipotesi del suicidio ha comunque una sua validità.
