Bowfinger, interpretato da Steve Martin, è un regista a dir poco squattrinato che si ritrova per le mani un'ottima sceneggiatura, che però sottoposta al divo del momento Kit Ramsey, ossia Eddie Murphy, per il ruolo principale, viene bocciata. Bowfinger decide di girare il film senza che Ramsey se ne accorga, e quando il suo operatore gli espone i suoi dubbi, Bowfinger replica con l'indizio che ho postato. 
Gli elementi parodistici che riguardano Cruise sono l'appartenenza di Ramsey alla MindHead, una chiara parodia di Scientology, che Ramsey frequenta per tenere sotto controllo il suo impulso a mostrare i genitali alle cheerleader, e il rimando qui è alle chiacchiere che giravano anni fa circa il fatto che Cruise si fosse unito a Scientology per "curare" la sua presunta omosessualità.
