Ciao ;):o:D:D:D:D

For a talk with GRRM over pizza; Aggie posted it mostly but I'll repost here

A Song of Ice and Fire

> Brotherhood without Banners

> REAL new spoilers

Hey all - just wanted to let you know that we just got back from lunch with George. No, he didn't read us another chapter, but he was highly amused that we managed to con you guys so thoroughly - particularly that we swindled Ran, who he figured would be too canny for such a ridiculous ruse!

And by the way - this hoax was pure payback for the EEEEEeeevil trivia questions that Ran cooked up. So Ran, before you talk about "penance" just bear in mind that you started it!

Anyway - two very important tidbits to report (and on my word of honor, this isn't a scam!)

1. I asked "Is magic coming back into the world because there are dragons, or are dragons coming back intot he world because there's magic?"

George said, "Yes. Hmm, there's excellent cheese on that pizza!" (in combination with some of the stuff he said on a panel this morning, I take it to mean that the seasons, winter and summer, are magical in nature, and he's going to reveal what it's all about eventually, but not yet.)

2. Son of Hot Pie asked about Duskendale. George said that the Duskendale rebellion happened because the Lord of Duskendale demanded certain rights for his citizens and the Duskendale town charter from King Aerys. He stopped paying taxes to demonstrate his anger. George said this was a key moment in Aerys' reign, because until then, he had always worked closely with Tywin to solve the realm's problems, but he and Tywin were no longer seeing eye to eye - so Aerys went off with the Kingsguard and a small force of men, and arrested and executed the Lord of Duskendale. During the struggle, Ser whathisface of Gaunt died, and Aerys did bad things to Duskendale as retribution.

Although the incident is minor, the fact that it's evidence that Aerys no longer trusted Tywin is very interesting, and certainly has implications about how far back the Lannisters were planning rebellion... obviously Tywin had some irons in the fire a loooooong time ago, and we haven't found out about them yet, either.

I swear, these things are true!

Aghrivaine - Knight of the Cheesesteak.

Still not sure if I should believe you.

Anyway, thanks for those interesting tidbits. I've always been of the notion that Dragons and Magic work mutually. One doesn't bring the other back, they both are connected so that they will both be around at the same time.

I'm not exactly sure what the connection is or why, but that is what I've been thinking.

(Taken Out of Context)

Heh. Well, I admit that I was caught hook, line, and sinker. Never even thought to doubt it. I'd so set my sights on Asha or a Dornish POV as the new one that when it turned out it wasn't . . . well, for some reason it made it seem likelier. GRRM always does the unexpected!

It was great fun though, other than leaving that gaping hole that needs to be filled with new information.

Gwayne Gaunt was the one that died. Very interesting information about it. Any information on the name of said lord of Duskendale? And Tywin and rebellion . . . are you just basing this off of the fact that they weren't seeing eye to eye any longer, or did GRRM say some extra things about it?

RAN,

I don remember if a name was given but the wife was from the Free Cities and she pushed for this rebellion.

Apparently, those people expect more rights for their citizens.

I believe Aggie got the rest except that Aerys was captured and went in with a small force, thinking he ould handle

it.

Thanks for asking one of my questions SOHP. And getting two answers too (the murder of Gawane Gaunt!) Kick ass!

I have seen things you people wouldnt believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams...glitter in the dark near Tannhauser Gate. All those...moments will be lost...in time...like tears...in the rain. Time to die

Aerys was captured you say? It seems there was more to Ser Barristan's heroics at Duskendale than the White Book notes. Foolish of the Dunnington to take such a hardline with the King though. Especially with Tywin as Hand and King's Landing just down the road.

"Rhaegar fought nobly, Rhaegar fought valiantly, Rhaegar fought honorably. And Rhaegar died."

I know. Really. I tdoesn't matter how incompetent the king. If you live a couple of days away from a fellah that can call thousands of troops and send htem where he wants at his whim you swallow your pride. Specialy if the guy is insane.

I always assuemd there was mroe to barristans deeds then we hear. YOu have to be more then just a good tourney knight to be legendery and listed along with the all tiem greatest. Especially when your still alive and you *already* have this reputation.

"These Songs will not be to everyone's taste, for there is little variation among them, all of them containing the same words, such as: hero, knight, horseman, galley slave, serpent, dragon, wolf, lion, eagle, falcon's nest and sword, sabres, lances, necklets, medallions, decrees, heads chopped off, slaves carried away, etc. May those who find them pleasing sing them; may those who do not, go off to sleep."

When was this Duskendale affair? And could it be that Tywin was in favor of milder measures? Doesn't seem in character, but...

Anyway, are you folks going to post more detailed summaries of the 2 chapters? Pretty please .

Also, what happened with the scond reading? It was _scheduled_ right? Or was Lodengarl preparing the hoax so far back?

Maiab, I think I picked up somewhere in these threads that there was no second reading at all, but that GRRM did come to their rooms at about 4 o'clock to share the fun of the Con.

Slayer of double standards

Ran

King o' the Board

There was to be a second reading, really, but it was cancelled. The hoax, as they've said, developed only after the trivia contest.

I'm not sure if Tywin necessarily wanted a less harsh manner to deal with it. But I doubt he cared for Aerys and a small troop going to Duskendale to try and handle the matter. Perhaps Tywin wanted to wait and bring up troops to lay proper siege to Duskendale.

Or perhaps Tywin was willing to give the Lord of Duskendale a chance to repent. It's one thing for him to wipe the Reynes and the Tarbecks, who had been habitual trouble-makers, but if this was the first time there was a problem between Duskendale and Aerys . . .

GRRM mentioned that Aerys didn't tell Tywin, desiring to do this on his own. Didn't work!!!

maiaB

Mistress of the Coin

Did Tywin rescue Aerys in the end? Hm... looks like Aerys started to suffer an inferiority complex when he noticed that all the real work of ruling was done by Tywin. Didn't he notice before or is it just that until that point he didn't care?

I also wonder if it was shortly after that experience that he recruited Varys and became afraid to leave his capital.

And again, how many years before the Harrenhal tourney did it happen?

Ran

There's no clear date, I imagine. Barristan's White Book entry is little help. It happened before he killed Simon Toyne, but we don't know how that relates to Aerys's reign. At a guess, I think it may have happened in the early 270's.

I'm not sure Aerys was really captured - my impression was that Gwayne Gaunt was just killed during the fighting. Also, George said that Aerys just went off and did this on his own, which was the first sign of his growing distrust of Tywin... and perhaps (though George didn't say it) the first sign of his growing madness.

On one hand, this sounds important - on the other, George was very off-hand about it, and didn't even remember the name of Lord of Duskendale.

Ran, I asked George about the Ghis/Valyria - Rome/Greece thing. He said that there was no clear parallel, though elements of both are in both Ghis and Valyria. He also mentioned that he sort of had the Mamluk's and Jannisseries in mind when creating the Unsullied. (in that they were slave legions)

Aghrivaine - Knight of the Cheesesteak.

A few questions I asked for Ran and a few I asked myself.

Can any noble have a paramour regardless of gender, rank, or marital status? For example, an unwed young heiress having a paramour.

Could each partner in a marriage have their own paramour?

Yes, but it would depend on the rank of the partners.

Is homosexuality tolerated to an equal degree for women as it is for men? If so, can one's paramour be of the same gender?

One's paramour can be of the same sex.

Is Waters the noble bastard name for KL and the immediate region (such as Stokeworth and Rosby) around it?

Yes.

Are Prince Duncan the Small and Duncan, Prince of Dragonflies one in the same or are they different people?

They are one in the same.

King Maekar I Targaryen died in battle against an outlaw lord. Was that outlaw lord a Blackfyre Pretender?

No.

I arrived here a King's Hand, riding through the gates at the head of my own sworn men, Tyrion reflected, and I leave like a rat scuttling through the dark, holding hands with a spider.

Finally we know the KL bastard's name! And we also know more of Aegon V children!

With hindsight it could be predicted that waters would be also the bastard's name for KL, after all the narrow sea was always closely associated with the Targaryens.

In ASOS, Jaime chapter, the White Book mentions that Ser Barristan rescued Aerys

soooo, based on the terminology, I think that's a clue he was captured.

I thought I heard that he was captured but, after waking up from some serious hanging out and partying, I'm not so sure now. Dead brain dead cells and all will do that.

Ran

Interesting that he no commented that first question. Originally I even went further, putting in Arianne Martell as an example, but decided against it -- the question was really general, and I was just grabbing the only young heiress that came to mind . . .

Hrm. I do wonder what it means. Either he's not decided, or I've stumbled across some sort of plot point.

As far as Aerys goes, it's said that Barristan saw Aerys to safety despite multiple wounds. This doesn't imply that Aerys was captured at any point, but it does imply that he was in a very hairy situation and Barristan managed to (just barely) cut him out of it. Gwayne Gaunt's death appears to have been avenged later, if the entries are supposed to represent actions in chronological order.

This is going to come off really bad but I genuinely can't understand some of the questions you guys have asked. It seems to me there are so many more interesting questions to be asked and apparently you lot had quite a lot of time with GRRM. I grant that two or three answers are of some value but I guess I feel that some other, more relevant questions could have been asked (taking into account that GRRM wouldn't answer some of them, it still would have been worth it for the glimpses). All these questions about paramours and whether or not homosexuality is accepted as much for women as for men, what am I missing here?? Is it about Arianne possibly having a paramour? If so, it seems so minor, when there are so many other things. Fine, so she has one. Or maybe not. I'm referring to one or two of the threads in AFFC as well.

Note: I'm really just voicing some frustration, it's not a personal attack on you guys. I'm just questioning the questions you folks ask when you have so many chances.

Slayer of double standards

As everyone at every previous convention has noted, and as several people have noted here, it is indeed quite difficult to actually spend all of your time talking about the books. GRRM is more than just the books, after all.

Many questions which you would consider interesting were not asked, I suspect, because they'd be no commented. Or, perhaps, they were asked and they were indeed no commented. We've been told that a couple of people did try some questions, but a lot of them weren't answered. It always seemed obvious to me that you're not going to get anywhere asking questions that pertain very strongly to the plot.

I would personally love to sit down with GRRM and talk a couple of hours about his views concerning honor, chivalry, duty, justice, and righteousness, with reference to particular characters and scenarios in the stories . . . but it just ain't happening.

They didn't have so many chances. So it goes.

(And those questions concerning paramours and Dorne were all mine, kindly asked by Trebla -- and I wanted to find 'em out because I'm as interested in minor bits and bobs of the setting and its theme as I am about the big plot mysteries. Sue me

Trebla

Herr Stinking Rotten-Bastard

Well, personally, most of the questions that people on the board would ask would get a "No comment". And these are just the few that I asked.

I like background and I like angles. I think Ran and mine fit that. Plus, Dorne is the region we know the least about.

Lastly, you could have just gone to the con yourself.

(Shamelessly recruiting for Torcon already!)

EDIT: Also, Lannister also conducted an official interview with George that I personally didn't want to overstep. Most of these questions were asked late night over a beer. We also talked about countless other topics. He talked football with Loady and I for quite a while one night. Bombarding George with, "Who is Coldhands?", Who is the 3rd head of the Dragon?" would probably be unbearable. We didn't do that. And that is probably the reason that he ended up hanging out with us to wee hours of the morning from Thursday night on.

I arrived here a King's Hand, riding through the gates at the head of my own sworn men, Tyrion reflected, and I leave like a rat scuttling through the dark, holding hands with a spider.

I agree with much of what Ran said. Many questions that will deal directly with central plot points will get a RAFO (or in this case, "have some good cheese"). I'm not sure what you have in mind that's more interesting, but each person's interest vary, so there you have it.

Also, several people have offered to ask questions in lieu of others who cannot attend. It's a favor they do for those who cannot make it to the Con. In reality, those who ponied up the cash should get to ask whatever the heck they want, no? I understand your sentiment, Calibandar, but the truth is, there's precious little ground for any grievance/complaint here.

Yeah I knew they were yours and Trebla's, he said so

Maybe I'm just disappointed because few of these questions and answers hold much value to me personally. I can only speak for myself after all. I also know that Aghr and Iseult etc tried to get as many questions answered as they could, I just get the impression that some other, more grander stuff, not necessarily strongly related to the plot could have been tried as well. In order not to be too vague, I'll give some examples. I would have liked every tidbit about The Others, or The Children, Bran's story, the new Sword of the Morning, or even something about the FM following Arya's chapter. Something about The Wall perhaps, or a question which would give some info, if only a bit, about Summerhall, or a snippet about Melisandre's motives or her past. Or Asshai. Duskendale and a paramour for women is all nice and well but.. you know.... (or maybe you don't ). I know we won't get a chance like this again till April next year because GRRM isn't going to attend anything anymore till then.

Re: asking questions of interest

Personally, I feel George is going to let us know what he wants us to know in his own way, in his own time.

My questions to him were about other authors and what he thought about various real life events. I figured he gets enough questions about Jon Snow's parents, and I'd rather find out about *who* GRRM is as a person. And from asking those questions, I found out a bit more about his stories in the process.

I'm much too tired and stressed (I've got problems at work before I've even started the job!) right now to relate all of things cool that are George & Parris, but I will say that these two are simply amazing. I was blown away by their interest in hanging out with us.

I'm pretty sure GRRM said he was captured as I was on his left. Aggie was on the right.

But, as we seem to have diverging views; Lanny and Pod and Ser Johnny (Lobster of the Lamp) were there, as was Lanny's wife, so maybe they can verify.

Class Bully1

Just one question. Did you guys ask how far gone he was with affc, or even when he expected to finish it? Or has he set a date, or am I in a completely wrong thread here.. Blah....

Also I agree with Calibandar, what I would like the know, is the avreage size of castles/towns/armys etc. The little things really, although that might just be me! :P

Edit::-:

You people do a damn goiod job though, bringing theese sample chapters and spoilers up for the rest of us a continent away, I just wanted to add that!

Nessuno ha da dire niente su questo dialogo, mi aspettavo francamente qualche risposta.

Spero che qualcuno gli dia un'occhiata e mi dica se la cosa è interessante.

The Lady of Shalott

Di Alfred Lord Tennyson

Lungo entrambe le rive del fiume si stendono vasti

campi di orzo e segale che rivestono la brughiera

fino a incontrare il cielo;

e attraverso i campi corre la strada verso la turrita Camelot;

E la gente va e viene,guardando dove i gigli sbocciano attorno all'isola,

li sotto, l'Isola di Shalott.

Salici impalliditi, pioppi tremuli,

Lievi brezze si oscurano e fremono

Nella corrente che scorre perpetua intorno all'isola nel fiume,

fluendo verso Camelot.

Quattro mura grigie, quattro torri grige

Sovrastano un prato di fiori,

e l'isola silenziosa dimora

La Signora di Shalott.

Intanto non sarebbe male che qualcuno che conosce bene l'inglese lo leggesse, e magari dopo tradurre se è il caso le parti di rilievo. ;)
